Mevis Slovakia opened a new plant in Šamorín, not far from Bratislava, in the mechanical and electronics industrial district linked to Confindustria Vicenza. A step that strengthens the European presence of Mevis, a company from Rosà with a worldwide reputation in the production of metal components. Amongst others, the opening ceremony was attended by the Italian ambassador to Slovakia Robert Martini, local authorities, major customers, the president of ESF (European Spring Federation) and a representative of Confindustria Vicenza.
The Mevis Slovakia project started more than ten years ago. The Rosà-based company had decided to open a production hub in one of Europe's most strategic areas in the field of mechatronics. In 2006, a 7,000 square metre plant was opened in Šamorín. Today, the name of Mevis stands on a 12 million Euro plant which employs 130 people and represents the state of the art in the production of small metal parts for the automotive, electromechanical and household appliance sectors.
It was crucial for Mevis to get closer to its customers who had moved production and services to Central Europe. The production site in Šamorín has experienced steady growth: in 2015, the plant area reached 21,000 square metres, while the turnover exceeded 17 million Euro, and 74% of the production of Mevis Slovakia is intended for the automotive sector. The area is, in fact, the beating heart of the European automotive industry, which has grown exponentially in recent years.
Mevis Slovakia has just opened and can already boast two prestigious awards: as part of the "Building of the year" competition, it received the first prize for quality and technological innovation from the Bratislava University of Technology, and first prize for choice of materials and environmental solutions.
Why invest in Slovakia? "The analysis that led us to the investment lasted a couple of years and was extended to several Eastern countries," says Federico Visentin, managing director and president of Mevis S.p.A. "The choice eventually fell on Slovakia because of its proximity to Germany, the undisputed centre of gravity of the automotive market, and Poland, equally important for household appliances. In 10 years, the choice has not only proved successful, but the scenario has even improved, as Slovakia has become one of the European countries with the highest ratio of cars produced to the number of inhabitants. As proof of this, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a car maker in "great health", has recently chosen Slovakia as the location for its new production plant. With less than 5.5 million inhabitants, this country produces 1.2 million cars every year, while Germany, with 80 million inhabitants, produces "only" six million. Similarly, in the home appliance sector, Slovakia is proving to be an excellent platform, also thanks to a significantly improved motorway system."
Mevis S.p.A. has been one of Europe's leading manufacturers of metal components for half a century. Today, the Mevis Group employs a total of 520 people. In 2015, it achieved a turnover of 70 million Euro, split as follows: 70% automotive, 15% electromechanical, 10% household appliances, 5% other sectors. The projection for the current year is 80 million Euro. Major customers include General Motors, Fiat, Honda, Bosch, Electrolux, Magneti Marelli, Whirlpool.
